About Tehri Dam

Perched at 260.5 meters (855 feet), Tehri Dam claims India’s tallest dam title and secures the 12th global position. In New Tehri, Uttarakhand, it stands as a rock and earth-fill embankment dam on the Bhagirathi River, completing Phase 1 in 2006. The dam serves THDC India Ltd. and the Tehri hydroelectric complex, generating 1,000 megawatts (1,300,000 hp) of hydroelectric power. The 1,000 MW pumped-storage scheme is under construction, with the first two units expected in 2023.
